Q1: What's the best way to teach students to mix the documentary with acting and fiction?
I would add a requirement that all group members have to be in the documentary to get them acting in the doc. For works of fiction, give a prompt that is a person, place, or thing and let them come up with the story. It will be an original work with some small nudges to get them started.
Q2: Do students get to choose 100% what their documentary is about or are there limits/boundaries?
You can provide students with a creative constraint to help them narrow their focus, but I find students get the most out of the activity when they can identify and share the stories that matter to them.
Q3: When do students create these documentaries? Are they part of a certain subject or a collaboration of many?
The documentaries can happen throughout the year. You can also give smaller variations of the project to get them comfortable and ready to do a scaled up version. I also find that you can give students time to go back and redo their docs and you will often times get a far better documentary.
